2023 Deadline Disaster Postponement

Filing deadline postponed for taxpayers impacted by 2022-23 winter storms to October 16, 2023

Due to the 2022-23 winter storms, many counties within the state of California have been designated by FEMA as disaster areas. On February 23, 2023, the IRS announced that it would provide automatic extensions of time for taxpayers who live or have businesses in these counties to file and pay their 2022 income tax returns.

The Federal tax deadline for these taxpayers is now October 16, 2023, and the State of California conformed to this IRS extension.

This means that there is no March 15 and/or April 15 tax deadline this year for California taxpayers who reside in designated counties. The counties who do NOT qualify for these automatic extensions are: Imperial, Kern, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, and Sierra. All other California counties qualify.

This automatic relief also applies to estimated tax payments for 2023. Payments that are usually due between January 17, 2023 and September 15, 2023 are now due October 16, 2023.
